News – Najib resists calls for crackdown

Posted September 1st, 2010 by mazmiin

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 — The country marks its 53rd anniversary today amid a season of racially-charged controversies with Datuk Seri Najib Razak continuing to defy Umno pressure to forcibly end the race relations debate — for he worries it might lead to autocratic rule.

At the Umno supreme council meeting last Friday the prime minister played down the need for laws such as the ISA to address racial issues arising from a Johor principal’s remarks and demands by Chinese groups which include his coalition partner MCA to accelerate economic liberalisation.

“Datuk Seri Najib said it has not crossed his mind to invoke laws to control freedom of speech although some have suggested otherwise, as it is still under control,” said an Umno insider.

“He said he still believes in politics based on freedom and openness and not autocracy,” said the source familiar with what transpired at the Umno supreme council meeting.

As anger grew over SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra principal Siti Inshah Mansor’s allegedly racist remarks to her pupils, independent songwriter Wee Meng Chee recently produced a music video containing racial slurs, angering some Malays.

Wee, better known as Namewee, had previously produced a video purportedly ridiculing the national anthem and the Islamic call for prayer.

The recent video resulted in calls for government to take stern action against Namewee.

The Najib administration has also been under pressure to ban non-Muslims from visiting mosques after the Selangor Islamic Council (MAIS) usurped the control of a surau for letting the non-Muslim Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching speak to the congregation.

Najib’s remarks at the supreme council meeting last week suggest he is resisting calls from the conservative faction of his own party for a crackdown.

UKM political scientist Professor Samsul Adabi Mamat said the prime minister has promoted political openness since assuming power in April 2009.

“He had said in his speeches that we are no longer in the 1970s where the government can invoke its powers as it likes,” Samsul told The Malaysian Insider.

“In many of his actions, we can see that Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been very open. For example in the case of campus politics, he has said that he was open to discussion,” he said referring to the proposal to allow undergraduates to be active in politics.

Samsul added that it is very unlikely for Najib would fail to convince his party to take the moderate approach.

“There will always be contradiction between top leadership, mid-level leaders and the grassroots. But traditionally Umno will always obey the top leadership,” said Samsul.

His colleague Dr Ahmad Nizamuddin Sulaiman said Najib’s remarks showed that the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman wanted to utilise a new approach to political challenges.

Ahmad Nizamuddin added that Najib probably realises that he can no longer play tough with his political opponents.

“In the current scenario, every tough action by the government will only cause its opponents to get more sympathy. For example if anyone is detained, the image would be widely circulated and swiftly, so this will create sympathy and the government would be perceived negatively,” he said.

“Maybe the prime minister has realised the problem, so he wants to be people-friendly,” he said.

However the analyst was sceptical if Najib would be able to promote openness without opposition from Umno members.

“He can say anything he wants, but can he implement them? I doubt the implementation would be successful,” said Ahmad Nizamuddin.

Chua Soi Lek
As for Chua Soi lek, it shows him to be the coward and hypocrite that he is. He dare not stand up for Namewee or insist on action to be taken against the racist headmistresses. He doesn’t dare speak up against the Umno warlords or antagonize Muhyiddin and Mahathir.

The writing is on the wall for MCA president Chua Soi Lek and if party members are smart, they will call another of their famous EGMs and throw him out before he does more damage to their party and the Chinese community, pundits said.

Soi Lek drew unprecedented anger from the community when on Sunday he made another major gaffe by calling popular rapper Namewee vulgar and irresponsible. The torrent of rage that flooded back would have necessitated an immediate apology in many democracies but in Malaysia, where MCA has to toe the political line set by coalition boss Umno, Soi Lek is expected to get off the hook.

DPM Muhyiddin Yassin

In fact many believe he was “under orders” to help Umno – especially the hawks led by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former premier Mahathir Mohamad – rally Malay support against the political opposition, in particular the Islamic-based PAS.

But in their haste to chase for fading Malay popularity, the group has also stomped on Prime Minister Najib Razak’s multiracial 1Malaysia plan, underscoring the crossroad that the nation has reached and the crucial direction it must now select.

“After 53 years of independence (from British rule) and nation-building, we still have people who propagate racism. It shows there is still fertile ground in Umno where racism is flourishing,” PKR vice president Lee Boon Chye told Malaysia Chronicle.

PKR vice president Lee Boon Chye

“If Umno continues to rule Malaysia, this is the path of destruction that the nation will be pushed into. Malaysians must make a stand – is this the sort of leadership they want? Is a closed-door racist Malaysia the sort of country they want to live in because this is what will happen? Malaysia will be shunned by the world as an apartheid nation if it doesn’t come to its senses and stop the rot.”

A coward and a hypocrite

Namewee, whose full name is Wee Meng Chee, had lambasted a school principal Siti Inshah for hurling racist remarks at her non-Malay pupils. She told the Chinese students to return to China and likened the Indian ones to dogs. Siti Inshah was not the only one, her colleague in Kedah also made similar racist remarks a few days after her.

However, Namewee’s tape which contained the foul language of his generation of rap musicians drew the attention of a ‘hungry’ Umno leadership. With the help of their media, Namewee’s tape was sensationalized and he was hauled up by the police and had his statement recorded on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Umno has been careful not to act against the two school principals, both of whom are Malay. The predominantly Malay teaching community is one of the party’s traditional electorate and Umno leaders do not want to offend it.

News – Police: Wee not arrested yet

Posted September 1st, 2010 by mazmiin

JOHOR BARU: Police have dismissed talk that they have arrested controversial rapper Wee Meng Chee or Namewee for allegedly posting an offensive video on popular web-sharing site YouTube.

“We have not arrested Wee as yet,” said Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff.

DCP Mohd Mokhtar said so far six police reports had been lodged against the rapper for condemning a principal who allegedly made racist statements against her non-Malay students in Kulaijaya recently.

Wee, 27, who was filming a video in Kuala Lumpur, later went to the Taman Tun Dr Ismail police station in Kuala Lumpur at about 9.15pm accompanied by his lawyer Raveen Singh to give his statement.

He came about three hours later and said he had co-operated fully with the police.

“I was not given any warning. I only gave my statement,” he said while expressing hope that people would continue to support him to speak up against racism.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said freedom of expression came with responsibility and due consideration should be given to the sensitivities of other people.

He said Wee might be unhappy with whoever but he should not have used vulgar words.

“I saw the post and I must say there are a lot of vulgar words or signs being used.

“He is not only showing off his talent but he is also using uncivilised words,” he said, adding that the current post was different from the Negaraku music video clip about three years ago.

On the same note, Dr Chua said school principals should also be charged if there was proof that they had used racial remarks against their students.

He said this would send a strong signal to all as the Prime Minister had said Malaysians should reject any form of extremism in race and religion.

“A person should face the music for such a breach,” he said.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said action would be taken against Wee if his latest video posting was indeed stoking racial sentiments.

“I have been briefed by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar and have directed the police to investigate the case from all angles,” he said yesterday.
